The Power of Intention in Islam

downloadAllah will not call you to account for thoughtlessness in your oaths, but for the intention in your hearts, and He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Forbearing.(The Holy Quran 2:225)

(Definition of “Intention”: one’s purpose or goal)

Islam teaches that our intentions behind our actions are very important.

The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) said,

“Actions are only (judged) by intentions. Each person shall be rewarded only for that which he intended.” (Bukhari, Muslim)

Islam encourages us to pay attention to our intentions. Also, Islam reassures us that Allah (swt) knows our hearts; our true intentions. This brings inner peace because we know that even if nobody else understands us, Allah understands us.

Another point is that sometimes we are not always “correct” in what we do, but we can still be rewarded for our intentions.

The Prophet (pbuh) said,

“When a judge utilizes his skill of judgment and comes to a right decision, he will have a double reward; but when he uses his judgment and commits a mistake, he will have a single reward.” (Bukhari and Muslim)

Of course we should try to do what is right and to make correct decisions. My point is that Allah (swt) knows we are humans and that we make mistakes. He wants us to know that He is looking at our hearts; our true intentions.

In the end, our relationship with Allah comes down to our sincerity. Were we sincere in seeking His pleasure?

“O God! Make my inside better than my outside, and make my outside (also) righteous.”

–The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), as recorded in Tirmidthi
