Living in Iraq 1

I currently live in northern Iraq in a city called Sulaymaniyah. Northern Iraq is a very peaceful place, and most of the unfortunate bombings occur in Baghdad/southern Iraq. Living here has been a very peaceful, spiritual experience for me. Even though I miss my family in America as well as the convenience of WalMart, I am extremely thankful to Allah (swt) for giving me this experience.

I feel detached from the fast-paced, frenzied life style of America. I have escaped from the “modern world” which is constantly vying for our attention and distracts us from our inner world. I also walk more!

My kids are happy here. We live in an apartment with other Americans/expatriates. There is a playground in the front where the kids go and play with their neighbors. The kids are not spending all of their time in doors, and I don’t need to watch them all the time because they are just out in the front of the building with other friends (and we also have guards).

The people of northern Iraq are mostly Kurdish. They speak Kurdish here more than Arabic. Kurdish people are nice–a mix of Persian, Arab, and Turkish cultures. I mostly spend my time as a mom, wife, homemaker, writer, and counselor/tutor to some young boys at a local middle school. I also use my time here to engage in more worship of Allah.
