Patience in the Quran and Sunnah

imagesOne hadith that I always try to keep in my consciousness is this:

“How excellent the affairs of the believer: his affair, all of it, is good for him; and this is not the case with anyone except the believer. If prosperity comes to him, he is thankful (to God), and if adversity falls on him, he perseveres patiently: so it is all good (for him).”

(The Prophet Muhammad, pbuh, as recorded in Muslim, Ahmad)

This hadith reminds me that my two states of being should either be gratitude or patience. Both gratitude and patience bring blessings to us.

Also, I am a firm believer in the quote, “Time heals.” Sometimes all we need is some time to feel better and to recover from hardships.

Here is a list of Quranic verses and hadiths about patience, from my first book, “The Basic Values of Islam”.

46. PATIENCE

The habit of bearing pains or trials calmly or without complaint
(See also Steadfastness, Reliance on God)

O you who believe! Seek help with patient perseverance and prayer, for Allah is with those who patiently persevere.

The Holy Quran 2:153

O you who believe! Persevere in patience and constancy; vie in such perseverance; strengthen each other; and fear Allah; so that you may be successful.

The Holy Quran 3:200

God loves the patient.

The Holy Quran 8:46

So be patient with a beautiful patience.

The Holy Quran 70:5

And most certainly shall We try you by means of danger, and hunger, and loss of worldly goods, of lives and of [labor’s] fruits. But give glad tidings unto those who are patient in adversity – who, when calamity befalls them, say, “Verily, unto God do we belong and, verily, unto Him we shall return.” It is they upon whom their Sustainer’s blessings and grace are bestowed.

The Holy Quran, 2:155-157

You shall certainly be tried and tested in your possessions and in your personal selves; and you shall certainly hear much that will grieve you, from those who received the Book before you and from those who worship many gods. But if you persevere patiently, and guard against evil, then you will surely triumph.

The Holy Quran 3:186

Bear patiently with what they say (against you) and leave their company in a polite manner.

The Holy Quran, 73:10

Bear patiently that which afflicts you. Truly that is the firmness of affairs.

The Holy Quran 31:17

Do the people think that they will be left alone after they have once said, “We have believed”, and they will not be tested?

The Holy Quran 29: 2

Be patient; for God will not let the reward of the righteous be wasted.

The Holy Quran, 11:115

Whatever you have will end, but what Allah has is everlasting. And We will surely give those who were patient their reward according to the best of what they used to do.

The Holy Quran 16:96

By the Time! Truly the human being is at a loss, except those who have believed and have performed good deeds and encourage each other to truth and encourage each other to patience.

The Holy Quran 103:1-3

Nay, seek (Allah’s) help with patience and prayer: and most surely it is a hard thing except for the humble ones.

The Holy Quran 2:45

So patiently persevere: for verily the promise of Allah is true: nor let those shake your firmness, who have (themselves) no certainty of faith.

The Holy Quran 30:60

In time of hardship, our patience will earn God’s pleasure.

Ask God of His grace, for verily God loves that He should be asked; and the best of prayers is persevering patiently for its fulfillment.

The Prophet Muhammad as recorded in Tirmidthi

…Whoso would be patient, God will give him patience, and no one is granted a gift that is better and more extensive than patience.

The Prophet Muhammad as recorded in Bukhari, Muslim

No fatigue, nor disease, nor anxiety, nor sadness, nor hurt, nor distress befalls a Muslim, even if it were the prick he receives from a thorn, but that Allah expiates some of his sins for that.

The Prophet Muhammad as recorded in Bukhari and Muslim

Whoever Allah wants good for him, he puts them to test. He puts them through difficulties, like a diamond or some metal that has to be burnt and then that which is bad from it is removed so that you have that which is the pure diamond or the pure gold…

The Prophet Muhammad as recorded in Bukhari and Muslim

Those closest to God are often the ones tried and tested the most. Patience is the mark of a strong believer in God.

The Quran is the directly exposed word of Allah and the Sunnah gives the applied implications of Quran. The Sunnah shows how the orders and teachings mentioned in Quran can be put to practice. Sunnah spreads of all the influences regarding the possibility of Quran’s teachings.
